The Power of Self-Awareness: Understanding Yourself to Influence Others

Writer: Daphne WallbridgeDaphne Wallbridge

Let’s talk about self-awareness—because honestly, it’s the secret sauce to being a better leader, communicator, and overall human. It’s about knowing what’s happening around you, how you react, and how you affect others. Without it, influencing people in a meaningful way is pretty much impossible. As Evy Poumpouras says in The Art of Influence, self-awareness gives you a full 360-degree view of your world—your relationships, your emotions, and the vibes you create.

Why Self-Awareness is a Game Changer

Ever feel like you’re just reacting to the world around you instead of steering your own ship? That’s where self-awareness comes in. It’s not just about knowing your strengths and weaknesses—it’s about understanding how your environment, the people around you, and even your own thought patterns shape your actions and decisions.

When you sharpen your self-awareness, you gain control over your mindset, your energy, and ultimately, your success. You stop letting negativity creep in unnoticed, start setting boundaries that protect your peace, and make choices that align with who you truly are.

Let’s break down why self-awareness is the secret weapon every leader (and human) needs to master.

1. Your Environment Shapes You

Ever notice how your mood shifts depending on who you’re around? That’s because the people in your life rub off on you—for better or worse. Surround yourself with strong, positive people, and you’ll feel that energy. But hang out with negativity, and it’ll drag you down. Being aware of this lets you take charge of your environment.

2. People are Contagious (Not Just in a Cold Season Kind of Way)

Emotions spread like wildfire. If you’re constantly around drama, conflict, or complaints, it’s only a matter of time before it seeps into your mindset. Recognizing this helps you set boundaries and protect your mental space.

3. You’re the Bouncer of Your Life

Imagine your life is a VIP event—who gets past the rope? Just like you wouldn’t let random people into your home, you don’t have to let toxic people into your life. You control who stays, who goes, and what behavior you accept.

4. Watch Out for These Personality Types

   - Drama Magnets – Their chaos becomes your chaos.

   - Conflict Junkies – They thrive on fights and arguments.

   - Perpetual Complainers – They never take responsibility and always play the victim.

Keeping your distance from these folks will help keep your mind clear and your life drama-free.

5. Face the Truth (Even When It’s Uncomfortable)

Being self-aware means being brutally honest with yourself. Sometimes, we tell ourselves stories that aren’t real just because they make us feel better. But that only leads to bad decisions and frustration. The sooner you face reality, the sooner you can make meaningful changes.

How to Level Up Your Self-Awareness

Self-awareness isn’t something you either have or don’t—it’s a skill you can refine, like a muscle that strengthens with practice. The more you understand yourself, the better you navigate challenges, relationships, and leadership moments.

So how do you sharpen this game-changing skill? It starts with listening more, reflecting honestly, and being intentional about the energy you allow into your life. Self-awareness isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. When you make it a habit to check in with yourself and adjust as needed, you become a stronger, more grounded leader (and human).

Let’s dive into five practical ways to take your self-awareness to the next level.

1. Listen More, Talk Less

   - Pay attention to feedback—especially if multiple people point out the same thing about you.

   - Observe how people react to you in different situations.

   - Absorb the world around you before jumping in.

2. Do a Personal Audit

   - Think about past feedback—was there truth in it?

   - Ask trusted friends, family, or colleagues for honest input on your strengths and weaknesses.

   - Compare what they say to how you see yourself—any surprises?

3. Check Your Inner Circle

   - Who are the five people you spend the most time with? Do they uplift or drain you?

   - Are you unintentionally surrounding yourself with negativity?

   - If so, it might be time to make some changes.

4. Pause Before Reacting

   - When receiving criticism, don’t get defensive—breathe and process.

   - Ask yourself: Is there truth in this? How can I use it to grow?

   - Respond thoughtfully, not emotionally.

5. Commit to the Process

   - Self-awareness isn’t a “one and done” thing—it’s a lifelong practice.

   - Regularly check in with yourself—are you aligned with your values and goals?

   - Adjust as needed to keep growing.

At the end of the day, self-awareness is about understanding yourself so you can navigate life with more confidence and clarity. When you know who you are, you move through the world with purpose—and that’s when you start to truly influence others. As Evy Poumpouras teaches, mastering self-awareness is the first step to mastering the art of influence.

So, take a step back, reflect, and start paying attention to the world you’re creating around you. It all starts with you.
